Mars vs. Pluto vs. Uranus/Jupiter: A Story Told in Three Parts

On Wednesday, June 8th, 2023, news broke of three seemingly disparate world events. On the surface, each story would appear to be an isolated incident, united only in their destructive quality. But each of these three stories evoke the unique astrological themes represented by a nasty T-square pile up with Mars in Leo, Jupiter/Uranus in Taurus, and Pluto in Aquarius. The precise manner in which a planetary aspect unfolds is difficult to predict in precise detail as the themes present within each sign and planet are multivalent. That being said, the broader themes of this particular car crash were always destined to be explosive, and as we look back into the rearview mirror, we can see how accurate astrology can be.

Hawaii’s Mount Kilauea, home of the volcano deity Pele, who represents the destructive and creative forces of the earth, erupted on Wednesday, June 8th, at 4:44 am. The name Kilauea means “spewing” or “much spilling”. The volcanic eruption created 13 to 30 foot high lava flows, though more concerning was the large amounts of volcanic gas and smog which spewed from the volcano, making the air toxic to breath for both livestock and humans.

At this time, Pluto (power, death/rebirth, destruction/creation) was in the air sign of Aquarius, in opposition to fiery Mars (severings, violence, intemperate heat) in the fire sign of Leo. Additionally, both Mars and Pluto were in  a sign-based square with Uranus (sudden changes/disruption) and Jupiter(expansion/increase) in the earth sign of Taurus.

Immediately, we can see the parallels between Pluto and Pele, both deities concerned with unearthing the titanic forces buried beneath the earth and cycles of destruction and regeneartion. Pluto’s presence in the air sign of Aquarius may also speak to the toxic air quality which followed in the wake of the eruption. If we were to look for the arsonist which lit the match, a highly combustible Mars, exalted in the fire sign of Leo, in opposition to Pluto, would be our main suspect. Additionally, Uranus in the earth sign of Taurus, may speak of the sudden, disruptive quality of the eruption while Jupiter’s desire to expand may have further exacerbated the volcanic explosion.

A series of roughly 418 wildfires burned across Canada, causing some 26,000 people to flee their homes. As a result of these wildfires, a massive haze of smoke descended on the Northeast United States, polluting the air and turning the sky orange.

Mars, the planet of intemperate heat, in the fire sign of Leo, in a square with Uranus(disruption/unforeseen events) and Jupiter (expansion and growth) in the earth sign of Taurus, would appear to thematically align with wildfires in Canada. Similar to the stories of toxic air quality following the volcanic eruption in Hawaii, Pluto, in the air sign of Aquarius, would appear to describe the destructive, polluted air which turned the skies of New York City orange.

At this time also, the government of Ireland revealed a plan to cull roughly 200,000 cows over the course of the next 3 years in an effort to reduce CO2 emissions. The plan has been met with outrage and protests from local farmers.

The symbol for the Venus-ruled earth sign of Taurus is the bull or cow. Mars (severings) in a square with both Uranus (rebellion) and Jupiter (idealism/beliefs) in Taurus would appear to be a clear illustration of the theme of the severing of sacrificial bulls to a higher ideal and the resulting backlash of the farmers.

The theme of rebellion and struggles with power is also echoed in the square between Pluto (power/control) in the sign of Aquarius (Utopianism/societal rules) and Uranus (rebellion/rapid changes) and Jupiter(idealism/beliefs) in the earth sign of Taurus. This sign based square between air/earth signs also suggests the issue related to new societal rules on methane gases emitted by farting cows, with Pluto in Aquarius representing governmental power structures and Uranus in Taurus representing the farmers and cattle owners who are resistant to the sudden changes brought on by government decree. Finally, Pluto in Aquarius also has to do with unconscious fears on a mass scale. The government’s fear of a burning planet due to the accumulation of CO2 and subsequent attempts to pass new legislation to fight climate change would appear to echo these themes as well. Whether or not killing 200,000 cows will save the planet is another story entirely.
